Changes in temperature and rainfall affect ecosystems and the ecology of plants and animals in various ways. Some species may be threatened through changes in the food web, while others benefit and expand their range. We conduct ecological analyses and use these to advice on how climate-related changes can be taken into account in the management of nature reserves and water resources.
Especially migratory birds experience the effects of climate change. The conditions on their migration routes and winter quarters change drastically. To contribute to a more effective protection, we conduct research into the ecology of migratory birds in their wintering areas in Africa. We track migratory birds and map out changes in the wintering areas with satellite data and field research.
