Data processing and management

Compatibility of our own spatial data with national databases like Nationale Databank Flora en Fauna (NDFF) and international standards like INSPIRE (establishing an infrastructure for spatial information in Europe to support Community environmental policies) are important to A&W.

A&W increasingly uses mobile GIS and GPS in the collection of field data. The main tasks of the GIS department are to prepare, store and manage all geospatial data collected in the field. The GIS department for instance developed a spatial database and protocol to store data collected during fish surveys (such as species, numbers, location, length etc.) in a standardized way.

We consider metadata as an important part of our data to document and guarantee it’s  quality. We use specific software to provide our data with metadata that lives up to both Dutch and European (ISO 19115) standards.
